The problem is that a person can only do so much research and still have time for writing and… eating and sleeping, too, not to mention a day-job. Poetic license is one’s only recourse other than hiring reliable, hard-working people to fact-check.

Oh, good! The thing about sci fi is, you’re always afraid someone more sciency than you is going to come along and tell you your story is totally bonkers. And then all you can do is cry “poetic license!”
