Inspiration Monday: Penguin Flight School

0 Flares Filament.io 0 Flares ×

I have a crick in my neck from tilting my head to read book titles at the biggest book sale I have ever been to. A Half-Price Books warehouse clearance sale so huge they had to have it in a convention center! They had grocery carts for books. Bookery carts! They even had a concession stand to revive you in case you passed out between the adult fiction and YA sections.

They say there’ll be an even bigger one in October. Better start stretching now.

Here’s some stuff you can read with your head right-side up!

The Rules

There are none. Read the prompts, get inspired, write something. No word count minimum or maximum. You don’t have to include the exact prompt in your piece, and you can interpret the prompt(s) any way you like.

OR

No really; I need rules!

Okay; write 200-500 words on the prompt of your choice. You may either use the prompt as the title of your piece or work it into the body of your piece. You must complete it before 6 pm CST on the Monday following this post.

The Prompts:

PENGUIN FLIGHT SCHOOL

MARTIAN KARAOKE*

LIPSTICK CAMERA

BRING THE FILE

BURNED OUT

*Inspired by Chris’ story last week. No, Chris, you don’t HAVE to use it, but I’m sure you’d come up with something good.

  1. I am engaged in sorting my books and deciding what to keep and what to release back into the wild. I only have so much space in my house and… well… it’s a pretty hopeless effort.

    • Yeah, I keep telling myself I don’t need more books. But I don’t listen. I have managed to put 10 books into a bag to be sold or donated, but as I’ve probably bought 30+ books this year, I don’t know that it will help.

      • I’m trying to read all the books I have, so I can decide which ones I really want forever. I am such a stupidly slow reader, though, and I have so many books, that I am probably doomed to failure. And then, of course, there are the ones I want to re-read. 😛

        • I am on a reading spree. Have to get some of these books out of here because they are taking up so much room and I am reading at least 5-6 a week at this point, plus occasionally writing. Of course, I don’t work because of a disability so that gives me more time, but I keep very few books and was using the library and then I started to collect them again by the bag and box full off of freecycle. Shame on me!

          • It’s hard to say “no” to books…
5-6 a week would be impressive for me even if I didn’t have to work full time, so, here’s me impressed. I have a small laundry basket of books whose fate depends on my reading them. Sadly, I am a slow reader.

          • I’m a pretty slow reader, too. And I’m in the habit of starting one (or two or three) before I’ve finished another. So I end up in the middle of 5 or 6 books at once and then it takes me months to finish them.

But one good outcome of having too many books and too little time is that you waste less of your time on bad books. I have recently developed the philosophy that if I’m halfway through a book and not enjoying it, I won’t finish it. There are too many better books that deserve my attention!

          • When I can’t read it means my depression is way out of control. I am just coming off of one of those times and making up for it now. But I am a fast reader and a hermit 🙂

  2. I am so jealous! A warehouse full of books? Sounds like my idea of heaven.

  3. Here’s mine, I (kind of) used Burned Out. Kind of. The Lady Pauncefoot

  4. Here’s my submission this week, “Just Another Pedro.”

  5. “There are too many better books that deserve my attention!”

An excellent philosophy. I started doing that after my tangle with Robert Jordan. There’s no point in reading books that thick if you aren’t enjoying it and no one is grading you. 😛
