“We’re standing in our own graves.”

Jim looked at Harry, at the rivulets of water cutting streaks down his muddy face. He looked at his combat boots, ankle deep in trench sludge mixed with blood. Eighteen days in a standoff. Rations gone. Ammunition dwindling.

“Yeah,” he replied. “But we’re standing.”

  1. Most impressive…

  2. Love it! You painted a complete picture of both the tangible and emotional scenes in those 50 words.

  3. An optimism I sure don’t have. Really good Stephanie. Would you consider prompts for a 50 word story on InMon? Love it that you posted this, it’s inspiring.

    • We optimists will convert you eventually. At least, we’re very optimistic about it. ; )

I try not to constrict InMon too much, but it could make a very interesting twist to see if people want to try a 50 word challenge. They often combine the prompts with other challenges anyway…so maybe it’s too easy as-is, haha. I might give it a try.

  4. This is a remarkable piece of flash fiction. The conversation really does say it all.

  5. Hurray! A rare glimpse at your own writing. I love the feeling here, and the sense of hope in a hopeless place. You should join in writing challenges more often. How about joining the Friday Fictioneers? – 100 words from a photo prompt, once a week.

  6. Vivid imagery. Impressive. Good work!

  7. trenches as graves is a great metaphor. Wonderful piece…you certainly packed a lot into just a few words!
