Inspiration Monday: Only One Rule

0 Flares Filament.io 0 Flares ×

I recently rediscovered the joys of trail mix! …And the tragedy of it never having enough M&Ms. But regardless, it is a wonderful pick-me-up when you’re feeling sleepy during a writing session. Also, exercise. Never underestimate the power of forcing blood to your brain!

It also helps to be inspired by great work like this:

The Rules

There are none. Read the prompts, get inspired, write something. No word count minimum or maximum. You don’t have to include the exact prompt in your piece, and you can interpret the prompt(s) any way you like.

OR

No really; I need rules!

Okay; write 200-500 words on the prompt of your choice. You may either use the prompt as the title of your piece or work it into the body of your piece. You must complete it before 6 pm CST on the Monday following this post.

The Prompts:

ONLY ONE RULE

DUEL AT DAWN

TRIAL AND ERROR

CHEESE AND WHINE

GREY SUN

  1. I am looking forward to getting back into writing grove. Its been a long summer and an end to the chaos is in sight! One of your prompts fits perfectly in a story that’s been spinning away in my brain.

  5. Trail mix in the US has M&M’s in it? I feel like that previous sentence is a good example of when you should be able to use both a question mark and an exclamation point in a sentence. Why? In Australia trail mix is just nuts and dried fruits…

    • Wait. Yours doesn’t have M&M’s?!?! Yeah, where’s the key for the interrobang?

Yeah, people make all kinds of trail mix, but I’m pretty sure most of it here has chocolate of some kind, and M&M’s are the most common. My mom used to make it with equal parts peanuts, raisins and M&M’s when we went on road trips, and of course as a kid I’d just eat the M&M’s – which makes this video especially funny to me. Now I can appreciate all the ingredients. But I bought some the other day and the proportion of M&M’s is sadly lacking. Not as sad as none at all, though. Chris, you could make a fortune selling M&M trail mix in Australia!

  6. Hi Steph, I said I’d submit something! I made it, from the comfort of my new home. Most of the boxes are in the garage awaiting further investigation, but the important items are unpacked; bed, kettle, tea – Macbook!
